Validity and reliability of the physiological and perceptual responses elicited during a novel treadmill-based Soccer Referee Simulation (SRS)

Abstract Purpose This study explored the validity and reliability of physiological perceptual responses elicited during a novel treadmill-based Soccer Referee Simulation (SRS). Methods Following collection baseline measures habituation procedures, eight sub-elite soccer referees completed single trial SRS whereby heart rate (HR), oxygen uptake (V̇O 2 ), blood lactate concentrations ([La − ] b differential ratings perceived exertion (RPE) were obtained. Referees’ HR also monitored series competitive matches (5 match observations per referee). For aspect investigation, well-trained males with playing experience comparable profile initially habituated, thereafter three separate trials which selected outcome variables ascertained. Trials separated by 3–7 days performed under standardised conditions. Results No differences evidenced between play in relation to mean ( P = 0.444; ES 0.29), peak 0.074; 0.74), or HR-based training impulse 0.498; 0.25).
